The USYD Business School proposal by the AbiGroup consortium (consisting of the architectural team of Sissons Architects & Architectus), developed an alternative solution to a previously chosen scheme during the construction tendering stage.
The proposal aimed to provide a more rational floor plate compared to the existing scheme. The design featured twin parallel floor plates running east to west with a central light filled atrium space. This generated new open park space on the northern side of the building. Revised internal planning of the existing scheme allowed the top storey to be removed, reducing the overall building height.
The design of the dramatic curved facade was in response to a significant, existing Blue Gum tree. The flowing geometry pronounces twin entry points that slide into the edges of the building from key pedestrian approaches.
This consortium was a short-listed finalist in its associated design competition.
