‘Strykarkatt Haus’ is a feral cal shelter, designed and built by HOK, Los Angeles for the charity ‘Fix Nation’. It was voted ‘Fan Favorite’ when exhibited at the Architects for Animals Charity Fundraiser held on the 10th September, 2014.

The HOK cat shelter design and build team aimed for a clean aesthetic inspired by modernist European architecture and furniture design. A pentagonal profile is used throughout the design as a reinforcing symbol of housing or shelter.  The simple shape creates two scales of shelter; smaller modular units placed within a large enclosure to create a ‘home within a home’.

This pentagonal shape also allows for a design and structure that could easily be replicated and built using a ‘kit of parts’ style of assembly (similar to a flat-pack IKEA product). We aimed to achieve this by using minimal materials, off the shelf products and simple connections.
